Why Take CELTA in San Sebastián

The CELTA is an official Cambridge English qualification in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages, which is globally recognised as a prestigious teaching qualification that will allow you to work in many different countries. There are over 350 authorised CELTA centres around the world, which are based in more than 80 countries. Each of these centres offers a variety of modes of course delivery: either face-to-face, online or hybrid and you can take the course on a full-time (4 weeks) or a part-time basis. With all this choice, it’s hard to decide where exactly to take your course. We’re going to give you some great reasons why you should pick our CELTA centre in San Sebastián.

The Beaches

San Sebastián boasts three beautiful sandy beaches, each with its own characteristics and energy. The Zurriola beach is a surfer’s paradise, with great waves that will keep any would-be or expert surfer entertained. You can rent boards in many places near the beach if you fancy giving it a go whilst you’re here. The Concha beach is a firm favourite with locals and tourists alike. It is located in the bay between two mountains and a little island called ‘Santa Clara’, making the sea much more peaceful than its neighbour, the Zurriola. In the summer, you’ll see beachgoers happily swimming around the bay, and if you’re lucky, you might even spot a dolphin or two! The last beach is Ondarreta, which is a hit with families and has a more relaxed vibe. In the summer, you’ll see kids paddling around the shoreline and making sandcastles.

The Gastronomy

San Sebastián is well-known for its gastronomical excellence and there are so many options to choose from that you’ll be spoilt for choice during the time you spend here. One of the most exciting offerings you can find here is ‘pintxos’, which are small bites of food, often placed on bread, that provide as explosion of flavours and textures to delight your palate. There are pintxo bars to be found all over the city and you can even find pintxo routes online that guide you to the very best places to sample some of the local delicacies. Whatever you fancy, you will always find something to tantalise your tastebuds in this city.

The Basque Culture

San Sebastián, or Donosti in the local Basque language (Euskera), is full of history and culture. The Basque people are one of the oldest in Europe and it’s a well-known fact that Euskera bears no similarities to other languages in Spain nor Europe. The culture has thrived for so long due to its geographical situation in which it was very difficult for other languages and cultures to have much of an influence on the population here. This mountainous terrain, which is synonymous with the Basque Country, is a huge part of the history of the region and has helped keep the language and the Basque customs alive to this day.

The Mountains

Having mentioned the mountains and their significance in the region, it’s no surprise that the Basque people take great pride in the mountains that surround the area. In San Sebastián, there are three mountains which overlook the city: Ulia, Urgull and Igueldo. Ulia is a great place to go for a morning hike to clear your mind and to get some beautiful views of the city. Just beware of the very steep slope you have to climb at the beginning to get there! Urgull is situated right in the middle of the city, and it emblematic due to the huge statue that sits atop its peak. This is a more relaxed walk that can be enjoyed after lunch or of an evening to watch the sun set. Last but not least, you have Igueldo. This historical area of the city boasts an original 1900s theme park, with rides and stands still in action to this day. To get to it, you can climb a very steep hill or enjoy the pleasure of riding the funicular railway to the top. It’s definitely a day out not to miss!
